Christmas Party

Merry December to all!

It's time for our Christmas party. We shall celebrate at Dr. Claxton's house on Thursday starting at 7:30. Please bring food, games and other entertainment if you wish.

Here are directions to Dr. Claxton's house from the Honors House:

1. Go left onto center.

2. Follow the left through Grand to Race Street.

3. Go right on Race Street (towards Wal-Mart).

4. Turn left on Hawkins, the street between Arby's and the hospital.

5. At the four-way stop, go straight.

6. Take the 3rd street on the left, River Oaks Commons.

7. Dr. Claxton's condo is the last one on the right, number 97.

9. If you are lost, call one of your intrepid officers.

10. If you are an intrepid officer and you are lost, figure something out.

11. The intrepid officers were thinking that there is a decoy street on the way with almost the same name as River Oaks Commons, and that turning on this street caused some of us confusion last year. So watch out for that.

Byron and Wordsworth

Hullo All,

I hope you're having grand Thanksgiving breaks.

Our poets for the week we get back are Byron and Wordsworth. So be sure to bring and/or memorize your favorites. :)

We also hope to have a feature: Nathan and I are working on the Robert Frost poem "Blueberries" for the week we get back.

And the next week (dead week) we'll be having our Christmas party at Dr. Claxton's place. (Yes, we did ask him first. But be sure to thank him.) So be thinking of entertaining things to do at the Christmas party.

Laureates, etc.

Greetings.

Our night of Petrarch and Milton went well
. We read many characteristically uplifting Petrarchan sonnets, and we also laughed at Satan's face. Actually, we laughed at Milton's portrayal thereof, which is somewhat less audacious to do.

Next week's poets are Ted Kooser (who was the last U.S. Poet Laureate) and Robert Frost. You can find a few of Kooser's poems at his official website and also at Poets.org.

Also, for our mutual edification: The current U.S. Poet Laureate is Donald Hall. None of us knew this tonight, and we felt we should. So, there's our little step toward enlightenment for the day. (I was surprised to discover that Donald Hall is the author of children's book which was one of my favorites a very long time ago: The Ox-Cart Man.)

Parties and Purgatorios

Thanks to all who came to the Halloween party and to the Purgatorio reading. Both were successes with costumes at the one and strange dragons sticking their tails into carts in the other. Thanks to those who brought snacks. I now consider the main events of our semester concluded. We'll still have a Christmas party (date is still pending. Suggestions) before the semester's out. Also, Andrea is working on a t-shirt design which should combine creativity with humor with the particular style that our club has aquired.
As Commander-in-Chief . . . I mean, President, of Souvenirs, I'm happy to announce that our relations with the administration and with other clubs are at an all time high. Unfortunately, attendance is at an all-time low. Bring your friends! After all, who doesn't like poetry? (Maybe that wasn't as rhetorical as I intended.)
A last bit of good news is that I beat Joanna to writing this blog. Expect a state-of-the-club address in January. I am Nathan Shank, and I approve this message.

Party, Poets, Purgatory

Hullo all,

Our costume party for Halloween is this Thursday, November 2, at Bethany and Andrea's house; a map should be included in the next newsletter. Bring snacks if you like, and dress as a poet or literary figure. (The cliché-ists, perhaps, are unaware of what savvy college students know well: Thrift stores are the mother of invention.)

Our poets for the week after the party are Francesco Petrarch and John Milton.

Also, our Purgatorio reading is coming soon: It'll be on Saturday, November 4 in American Studies 108. Come and devour pizza and (more importantly) poetry. Mmm, Dante.

Welcome

Salutations, and welcome to the Souvenirs Poetry Club blog.

Our other website died, and we didn't have the initiative or the geek power to fix it, but this one should be easier to maintain. We'll try to keep it updated regularly with basic news for your information and occasionally with poetry mutterings for your amusement.

Our poets for this week are Paul Verlaine and Lewis Carroll. So check those out. It's ok to bring Verlaine in English. As for Lewis Carroll... just don't trip over any slithy toves. Ew.
